Balloon Sinuplasty: Breathing Easy Without Surgery

What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Are you constantly suffering from chronic sinus infections and sinus pressure? Has medical therapy failed you? Do you want to avoid invasive surgery? Do you feel like you have run out of treatment options? If this sounds like you, a minimally invasive procedure called Balloon Sinuplasty may be the option for you. Balloon Sinuplasty is a procedure that can provide long-term relief for chronic sinusitis patients.

Am I a candidate for Balloon Sinuplasty?

You might be a good candidate for Balloon Sinuplasty if:

  • You have sinusitis
  • You do not have nasal polyps, tumors, or any other nasal obstructions
  • You can tolerate a procedure using only local anesthesia
  • Your maxillary, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses are affected

Though Balloon Sinuplasty is typically only performed on adults, a child may qualify if they have not responded to other treatments.

How is Balloon Sinuplasty performed?

The Balloon Sinuplasty procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia. A small endoscope with a tiny balloon is inserted into the sinus cavity. Once the physician finds the area of your sinuses with inflammation, the balloon dilates to open the sinuses. Once opened, the sinuses can resume natural drainage. Afterwards, the endoscope and balloon are removed from the sinuses. There is no cutting or removal of tissue during this office procedure, and there are no permanent implants.

How long does it take to recover from Balloon Sinuplasty?

Once you have undergone Balloon Sinuplasty, you can typically resume normal activities in about24-48 hours. As with any medical procedure, you may experience mild discomfort around your nasal area for a couple of days. Unlike standard endoscopic sinus surgery, you will not have to deal with scarring, bruising, or stitches after Balloon Sinuplasty.
